The Headline

Bulgaria is the cheapest country to live in the European Union by a comfortable margin. Numbeo consistently ranks Sofia as 20–30% cheaper than Bucharest and 50% cheaper than Vienna. Pair that with the flat 10% income tax and surprisingly strong IT/BPO salaries, and Bulgaria has quietly become a strong relocation destination for non-EU professionals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bulgarian hard to learn?

It uses Cyrillic script (same as Russian) but is Slavic β€” relatively phonetic and grammatically simpler than Russian. A2 (required for permanent residence) is reachable in 6–9 months of casual study.

Will the 10% tax stay forever?

It's been stable since 2008 with no political appetite to change it. EU pressure on tax harmonisation has so far been ignored. Plan as if it stays.

What's the catch?

Bureaucracy can be slow (Migration Directorate office hours, paper-heavy procedures), English availability outside Sofia/Plovdiv is mixed, and salary levels in non-IT roles are lower than Western Europe. But for IT/BPO/remote workers, the combination of low taxes + low cost of living + EU mobility is hard to beat.
